Rylee was parched. The sun had been beating down on her back as she'd skateboarded around the streets of East Oak, hitting 5th street and eventually, Oak Street. She always found it kind of weird, skating along Oak Street, as if she was staggering on the line that separated the East and the West, but Lee's corner convenience store had slushies that were to die for! She pushed her wavy hair out of her face that was matted with sweat to her forehead and carried her skateboard into the store, the bell going off as she entered.
Old Lee was reading a magazine behind the counter and Rylee shot him a grin before parading to the back of the store where the big slushie machine was with a plethora of flavors. She took a large cup and began mixing them all together. Proportioning them right was really important to get the perfect taste. Rylee knew this because she'd been coming here since she was little, although her and her brothers used to fight over quarters to buy them as they grew up. Her oldest brother Ben was the one who had showed her that it tasted a lot better if you mixed all of the flavors together. She thought of him every time she went to get one. And then the mystery of his death followed...
She pushed it out of her head as she realized she was almost overfilling the cup and heard the bell again, meaning someone else had entered the store.

Marissa gently shut her prized possession; her leather bound, pocket sized journal. She closed her eyes, the sun's rays beaming down on her pale face. For the past hour or so, Marissa had been sitting outside in one of the beautiful parks in East Oak, writing. She loved spending the sunny days outside, furiously scribbling poetry and sometimes short prose. Tucking her journal into her messenger bag, Marissa finished off the last sip of her iced mocha and reopened her eyes. To finish off the lovely afternoon, Marissa decided to head down to Lee's corner store. In the back, there was a box with old, discarded vinyls that Marissa frequently scavenged through to find something to take home.
The store was located on Oak Street, the official division of the two sides of town. Yet, the East Side lacked the charm and appeal of quirky and unusual places. She enjoyed the scratchy sound of old vinyls, not perfectly pitched CDs. Marissa opened the door to store, the bell chiming, sounding off her entrance. Lee, perched behind a magazine of course, gave her a grin. "Don't know if there's anything back there but feel free to take a look."
"I will." Marissa laughed. "Maybe I'll take home some of the ones I've ignored before." Heading to the cardboard box, she noticed a girl filling up a slushie. An attractive girl... Marissa shook her head. Her eyes still landed on the girl, staring. She knew it was rude, but couldn't help herself.

Rylee was still lingering towards the back of the store, her eye on comic books and other things that were in a box. Often she dug through them and the old records that were back there, although she didn't have the money to buy them, nor a record player. At the sound of the bell, she heard a girl's voice and then she also heard footsteps. It was a well-dressed girl who looked like she was from the East Side, but then again, Rylee couldn't be sure and she tried her hardest not to immediately judge them, even though it often happened in her head and she had to try and push it away.
The slushie was getting awfully cold in her hands and she figured she should probably go pay for it, but something about the girl caught her eye and as she turned, taking a sip of her slushie, she saw that the girl was looking at her too. "What you looking at?"She asked, it coming out more rudely than she expected. Oops.

Marissa noticed that she had stopped walking towards the worn out box, frozen in her tracks. Had she been in some sort of daze? A trance? Marissa couldn't even think about boys anymore without feeling... odd. Whenever her group of friends giggled and gossiped about who had the greatest ass or the best smile, Marissa found herself blankly nodding and agreeing to almost everything. Maybe she wasn't interested in the superficial boys of East Oak.... yeah. That was it.
Marissa felt her cheeks go pink, trying to shake the rambling and useless thoughts from her head. The girl had addressed her, sharply. Understandable, of course, because Marissa was being a total creep, staring at a complete stranger, unable to think properly and form audible words. "Oh, uh, nothing." Marissa mumbled quickly, ducking her head. Her face burned, hot with the blood rushing through her veins. This first impression wasn't exactly going well. Her auburn bangs fell into Marissa's blue eyes, the rest of her hair cascading forward as well.
She briskly walked to the box, idly digging through the box, pausing to stare at the records. Marissa felt the girl's gaze on her still, and she looked up from the box. "I'm... I'm sorry. For staring I mean. It was kind of weird and rude." She rambled, licking her lips. To herself, Marissa was screaming inside about how she needed to shut up. This was embarrassing!

Rylee hadn't meant for it to come out like that, it just sort of did. That's what happened a lot. She thought things and then blurted them out. She bit down hard on her lip. She mumbled something and then was looking in the box of old vinyl records, something that peaked Rylee's interest. Sure, the girl was a lot better dressed than she was, but should she really not talk to her just because of the fact that she seemed like she was from the East? She just couldn't help how she felt sometimes, because of what happened to Ben. Part of her just wanted to walk away because of that and because she knew that she'd immediately been attracted to her. It was how it went. Rylee had accepted the fact that she found both girls and boys attractive and this was the first girl she'd noticed in a while, plus she was looking at records!
She tuned back in when the girl started apologizing. "I was a little harsh," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "It happens. I don't have a filter from my brain to my mouth sometimes. Just ignore me." She took another long sip of her slushie, knowing that Lee knew her enough to know she'd pay before she left. "But if you were staring at me because you think my clothes are outdated or something, there's not much I can do about it."

The faint blush returned to Marissa's face, colouring her cheeks. She suddenly felt self conscience wearing her nice floral summer dress and matching blue flats. "Oh, nono." Marissa assured the girl. Even in old, outdated clothes, the girl was still attractive. There. She allowed herself to think that although Marissa's thoughts began to race, questioning her morality. The girl.. just.... Marissa couldn't stop staring. For once, she was allowing herself to feel the butterflies in her stomach from looking at the girl instead of pushing away the sinful thoughts.
"But, no, it's okay." Marissa smiled sweetly. "It happens. I was probably making you feel uncomfortable." She shrugged indifferently. To change the subject, Marissa picked up an old record. "I noticed you were staring at the box. I always thought I was the only one who bothered to rummage through." Marissa lightly laughed. "There's just... something about hearing music on vinyls. Can't be replaced."

Rylee realized she made the girl's face turn a faint red and she felt a tinge of guilt. She hadn't meant to make her feel bad, especially when she really didn't know why the girl had been staring at her. "Sorry, I'm doing it again," she apologized. Her mouth was just going off.
The girl was dressed in a summer dress with flowers, something Rylee had never owned, nor wanted to wear. She didn't like dressing up and she definitely didn't like floral patterns, but for some reason, it made this girl attractive. She normally liked people who were more rough around the edges, like Reese's brother, Gabe, who she'd had a fleeting crush on for a few years, something she was sure she'd grown out of.
She looked down at her worn sneakers that her and Reese had drawn on with Sharpies and her totally ripped jeans that exposed her knees and then finally to her old hockey t-shirt. Her wavy hair was unruly and a hat was thrown over it. She hated feeling the tiniest bit inadequate as she was mostly comfortable in her own skin, confident even.
"Nah, I don't get uncomfortable," she assured the girl. She took a look at the record that the girl grabbed. "Yeah, there's a lot of cool stuff in here if you look around. Although I usually just come for the slushies. I don't have a record player anyway."

"Don't apologize, you have nothing to be sorry about. Plus, I like girls who speak their mind." Marissa said, and realized what had just come out of her mouth. "Rather, anyone who speaks their mind." Typically, Marissa would be overcritical about the girl's lack of a filter and judge her. Yet, something about her. Her hair, her soft delicate features that had a certain edge to them, something living on the West Side could do to someone. it didn't take away from her beauty though. If anything, it enthralled Marissa.
"Yeah, it has charm. I love looking through this box." Marissa smiled, picking up a couple of older vinyls and a newer one. Her eyebrows furrowed together. "Really? I mean, I get that though... they are hard to find these days." she offered sympathetically. Marissa didn't like parading around her money. It wasn't like she was rich, like the Lockwoods or Hartfields. "Have you at least listened to a record player before? It's the best sound in the world. Honestly."

The girl's comment excited Rylee at first. I like girls who speak their mind. Well, she did a lot more than that. She was kind of in your face and didn't say things in a nice way because she didn't filter them into something acceptable before they came out of her mouth. She knew that she'd probably meant it as a general statement though and had to not take it how she'd heard it. "Well...let's just say I'm not the type of girl people introduce to their parents," she said with a slight chuckle before walking closer to the box and picking out a record.
"Yeah, I mean...I've listened to one before, that's how I know I like the sound. It was at an old music shop on 5th street," she explained, knowing that saying that gave away where she lived, as if her clothes didn't already. Rylee wasn't embarrassed or ashamed of where she came from, she just wanted to make something of herself.

Maybe not my parents.... Marissa thought to herself. Why did her parents have to be extremely religious and against any sort of relationship that wasn't centered around a good, Christian white male?
Marissa laughed alongside her, deciding to not comment on that fact. "Well, I think you're nice. It's hard to find people that are real in this town." She said. Once the girl came closer, a faint, warm smell enveloped Marissa. It was hard to explain. The scent wasn't anything in particular, but the girl smelled... inviting. Good. Her nose tickled with the scent and reached to examine the record with a nod. Her arm lightly brushed against the girls, giving Marissa the chills.
Frozen and silent, Marissa nervously licked her lips again. With a nod, she struggled to gain composure. "Yeah." Marissa said simply. West Oak. If there had been any chance before between the two of them, it was destroyed. Marissa cursed her East Oak heritage and smiled. "I... you... it's beautiful, really. I heard it first at my grandfather's house. When he passed, I got his collection and ever since then I've been in love." Marissa realized the girl probably didn't care, but found herself rambling about little, insignificant things around her.

Hard to find people that were real....that was an understatement. She wondered if Marissa meant in East Oak or Oakbrook in general, but she didn't ask. She didn't want to seem as if she disapproved of East Oak, even though she did. But she did know that not all of them were horible people. There had to be some decent ones, and was she totally blind or was this girl passing her judgment?
Her arm lightly brushed the other girl's as she came up beside her and examined a record. It gave Rylee a bit of a rush. She didn't really...have a lot of physical contact with people and if she did it was usually a high five after scoring in a game of street hockey or punching Gabe in the shoulder when he was grouchy. "Wow, that's definitely a nice gift to get when someone bites the dust." Shit, did that sound insensitive? Probably. She bit her lip. Normally she was all sorts of sure of herself, but she couldn't stop questioning how she was acting and if it was right. It had her all flustered.

Despite the blunt obtuseness of Rylee's fact, Marissa laughed. She would usually be overcriticial of her harsh and severe language, but somehow the girl was avoiding snappy and defensive comments at this point. "It was. Never bonded with him all that much except over music." she nodded. The girl's behaviour was cute and adorable. Marissa continued to stare, a smile on her face. She managed to lock eyes with the girl and found herself in the same daze of a trance. It was hypnotic and Marissa couldn't get enough.
Was it weird to think about kissing the girl? She didn't even know her name for crying out loud! But her lips... Marissa cleared her throat, breaking the silence that somehow wasn't comfortable, but wasn't awkward. It was... just there. "I suppose I should properly introduce myself first. I'm Marissa."

Rylee figured she could have reworded her statement a little better, but the girl didn't seem offended, something that shocked Rylee, because she was sure that would have sent her to the dog house with an East Oaker. Instead, the girl explained how it was a great gift and how they'd bonded over music. Did she really not know how to associate with people outside of West Oak? At least not properly. She was making quite the impression....
Rylee rocked back and forth on her heels, skateboard in one hand, slushie in the other, her hand getting colder and colder. Their gazes finally met and Rylee held it for as long as possible, not being one to shyly look away. If the girl wanted to stare, then she would stare back. Besides, she was nice to look at.
"First?" she asked when the girl introduced herself. "Why? What comes second?" She smirked before announcing her own name. "Rylee."

God, Marissa didn't even want to think about what came second. All she thought of was inappropriate thoughts, something that kind of made Marissa uneasy, but also intrigued her. Unexplored desires. She laughed again, returning a gentle smirk of her own. "I guess that can be decided later." Was she flirting? Marissa didn't know how to really, though. Was she coming across as creepy? As weird? What if the girl didn't... care for her that way and Marissa was imagining all of this?
Blood coursed through her veins. Marissa felt her heart hammering in her chest and she looked.. well, stared at the girl again. Rylee. "Well, now we know each other's first names, what comes next?" she joked, loosely holding the records in her hand as her eyes darted around Rylee's face, landing mostly on her eyes and lips.

Reese hopped smoothly off her skateboard as she entered Lee's corner store. She was almost positive she'd be able to find Rylee here, seeing as most days she stopped by for a slushie. She waved kindly to Lee, who pointed in Rylee's direction as if he knew exactly why she had come into the store.
Reese headed back to where the old records and CDs Lee lent out were and saw Rylee with another girl she had never seen before. However this didn't phase Reese or stop her from walking up to Rylee, and taking the slushie from her hand. She took a sip, and then handed it back to her friend as she explained her reason for showing up so abruptly. "Wade got his pants stuck on the fire escape again," she told Rylee. "He won't let me help him because he doesn't want me deeing his underwear." She looked up, finally noticing the girl for real. Her clothes and hair were nice and polished. It was pretty clear this girl was from the East side and it made Reese just slightly uneasy. Though she was looking through old vinyl so how harmful could she be? Reese was pretty sure she and Rylee would be able to take her.
