Rylee was mulling over in her mind whether or not Marissa was flirting with her. She was pretty sure her comment came off as flirting and at first she'd thought she'd crossed a line, but Marissa's reaction wasn't negative and she wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but did like the rush it gave her. Marissa had asked her what came next and she tried to concentrate on Marissa's hands, fumbling with the records, but somehow, she found that her gaze lifted up to her face. Was that an invitation? Rylee was blunt in what she wanted a lot of the time and she was very good about just saying things when she wanted to say them and not letting things hold her back, but she did feel a little stuck. Was Marissa interested? Was that even possible? Or was it going to be some joke where she got laughed at and the girl told all of her East Oak friends?
She was still thinking when someone swiped her slushie from her hand and took a sip of it before returning it to her. The only person that would do that was Reese and it was indeed her. It wasn't that she didn't want her to be there...but she kind of didn't want her to be there. She just launched into an explanation of why she was there involving Rylee's younger brother and the fire escape, something that happened every so often. She didn't know how many times she'd shown him how to properly navigate over to the Espositos, yet he still got stuck. "Uh, can't Gabe help him? Or something?" She didn't look over at Marissa in that moment, if she did, she was sure a blush would creep up her cheeks. Rylee didn't blush and she certainly didn't stumble over her words or feel awkward in front of people. She didn't really know what was going on. "How many times is this going to happen to him?" She barely just met Marissa's gaze again before turning to Reese once more. "This is Marissa...Marissa this is Reese...my best friend." [/center]

Marissa fumbled around with the old vinyls, as the two girls stared at each other silently. She was almost completely sure they were flirting. Maybe it was just Rylee's personality, though if it was it didn't seem to be a dominant trait. Cursing herself, Marissa wish she made the flirting more obvious, but didn't want to be rejected and shut down either. Adding a wink or something seemed... over the top. Afterall, Marissa only knew the girl as a West Sider named Rylee who also appeared to share a passion for records. And the last thing Marissa knew was she wanted to kiss the girl.
Marissa began to gnaw on her lips, not wanting to give anything away. Despite her best effort, the light dusting of colour appeared on her cheeks again. Why was she so.. flustered! Marissa avoided Rylee for a moment, nodding. Best friend. Made sense with their demeanor. Outgoing, straight to the point people. Maybe it was a West Oak exclusive thing. She waved, smiling. "Hi, nice to meet you Reese." One thing Marissa knew was pleasantries and how to properly socialize without insulting anyone.

"You too..." Reese said, taking a moment to try and figure out exactly what was going on in the store before she came in . The girls acted like Reese had intruded on some top secret meeting that just HAD to be resolved now. But Reese was positive she had never met this Marissa girl, and she was almost certain Rylee hadn't known her before either. Reese and Rylee knew all the same people. Or they at least talked about the new people they met with each other. She blinked a few times, and turned back to Rylee, "As for Gabe he's hanging out with Eli so he may or may not be the best person to contact at this point in time. And if you want to risk your brother being scared by a baked Gabe, then that's your call," Reese said all too honestly, as she took another sip of Rylee's slushie, this time without even taking it from her hand. She looked at Marissa again and then shrugged, "And your friend could come if she really wanted to. I mean... it's just an ally way where your brother is dangling by his belt loops." It was just down the street after all. And it seemed like Rylee was intent on continuing whatever conversation she was having with this girl.

Part of Rylee wanted to facepalm at the interaction. She loved Reese; they were like sisters and she'd never had one before, but she sure picked a perfect time to show up. She listened to what Reese had said, thankful that Marissa was polite to her friend which also made her like her and think she couldn't be like others from the East. "You're right. Gabe probably isn't the best person to ask then." Damnit, Wade! she thought, giving in. It looked like she'd have to go back and help him.
She turned to Marissa as Reese took another sip of her slushie and tried to figure out what to say to the girl. She wasn't sure where their conversation was headed, but if she left now, it probably wouldn't mean anything anyway. Just some random conversation with a girl in the back of the convenience store. "Sorry, I have something to take care of. My brother Wade...gets himself into interesting situations," she tried to explain. There was no way Marissa would want to venture into West Oak where her crappy apartment was to watch her get her brother unstuck from the fire escape. Rylee wasn't sure she'd ever find someone to want to do that with her. "I have to pay Lee for my slushie first. You know, the one you keep drinking," she said, half-jokingly to Reese and then glanced over at Marissa again. Reese was acting as if they were really good friends when they'd just met and Rylee had never felt so tongue tied. She hated it.

Marissa locked eyes with Rylee again, and smiled. A genuine, cheek splitting smile. She couldn't help herself. "Oh no, it's okay." she said with a nod. "Thanks though. I mean, I should probably head home. I've been here longer than expected..." she trailed off, tucking the records underneath her arm. "Plus, it's probably not the best idea to leave your brother hanging there all alone." Marissa pushed her bangs aside, sighing to herself. Would she ever see Rylee again? Her heart was fluttering and she felt speechless, once again. Looking down at the records in her possession, a sudden idea came to Marissa's mind.
"Oh, hey! I know this is really sort of random and... yeah, but have you heard about the music competition that goes on in town? Oakbrook Has Talent or some name equally as terrible as that? Anyway, maybe we should... meet up there, or something... if I'm not being to bold or assuming." Marissa rambled, feeling the blush creep up again. She was constantly making an ass of herself right now. "Despite the bad name, people really are talented. It's mostly East Side kids showing off but it's enjoyable. And my parents are making me go." Marissa rolled her eyes slightly. "You should come.... and your friend too." She offered, glancing between Reese and Rylee with a small smile. The worst thing that could happen was they turned down her offer, but Marissa figured it was worth it. She wouldn't be able to forget Rylee and the rush the girl gave her.

"Yeah, I don't think Wade dangling by his belt loops for a long period of time is good for him or for any of the neighbors to see," Rylee agreed, feeling a slight tinge of disappointment as Marissa said she had to leave, although at the same time she knew that it probably wasn't a good idea to invite her to the west side, even though part of Rylee didn't care. She rocked back and forth on her heels, waiting for a parting or something, but then Marissa spoke up again, speaking of an event on the east side that did sound a little lame, but actually kind of cool, even if it probably did only showcase East Oakers. She liked Marissa already for the way she rolled her eyes because her parents were making her go.
"Nah, you're not being too bold. I haven't heard of the event, but I'll go. Could be entertaining." Mostly she could scoff at all of the East Oak kids who were trying to show off. But then an idea popped into her head, and she turned to Reese. "Oh my god, Reese, you have to do that. You're talented!" She looked back at Marissa. "She's talented. Like singing and playing the guitar...well all instruments actually." But seriously this was an opportunity for Reese to showcase her talent. I mean, even if it was mostly East Siders, if anybody had balls to enter that kind of competition it was Reese and Rylee. "I could even accompany you on an instrument or something. I'm not totally bad with music." Even if she did mostly sing in the shower, she knew she didn't sound bad. "I'll uh, scope you out? I'd ask for your phone number, but I don't have a cell phone and my home phone is pretty much used for my mom to yap with her friends or Wade making prank calls." She grinned at Marissa. "But I'll definitely be there. When is it?"

"Great!" Marissa couldn't keep back the joy in her voice as she genuinely was excited. She would be able to see Rylee again! And her attempt had been successful! This was the best feeling and it showed with another wide grin towards Rylee. "Great." she repeated. "It's next Saturday, a week from today. It'll be fairly easy to find since the weather should be nice. It's at the park in East Oak... just look for a bunch of overdressed kids looking stressed out or overconfident. But yeah, definitely, I'll find you and we can meet up and hang out." Marissa smiled. "I'll give you my number though... just in case anything happens." She added quickly. Picking up a scarp piece of paper and pen from the counter, Marissa scribbled down her number and handed over the piece of paper with a smile.
"Really? I wish I was musically gifted." Marissa said with a small sigh, smiling at Reese. "You should definitely sign up then. A West Sider has never entered the competition before... it would make things interesting." She added, adjusting the records underneath her arm. "If you win, you get $2500 dollars. Scouts come out too to look for local talent and whatnot. In case you needed any motivation."

Reese had opened her mouth to retort, knowing that she had no business competing in some sort of competition - especially since it was taking place on the east side of town. But she couldn't even quite get a word in while Rylee more or less volunteered her. Reese stuck her hands on her hips and narrowed her eyes in Rylee's direction, though neither of the other girls seemed to notice. Reese knew she wouldn't be allowed out into East Oak. Rylee probably wouldn't either. Though her friend was much more comfortable breaking that rule than Reese.
Right as Reese started to speak up again, the Marissa girl who continued to convince Rylee of attending the competition, said something that caught Reese's attention. The cash prize was huge. Probably nothing for the East Oakers who were competing, but to Reese it was nearly all the money in the world. And the opportunity to be looked at by scouts? Those opportunities didn't rear their heads in West Oak. And suddenly, Reese was considering the crazy notion to venture into East Oak.

Rylee tried to hold in her excitement as Marissa handed over her number on that tiny as scrap of paper. It was a good thing that she was fairly good at playing it cool as and so she did with a hint of a smile on her lips. Usually there was no way in hell that she'd willingly choose to spend time around a bunch of pompous east oak people. But she liked to think of herself as a good judge of character and Marissa seemed worth getting to know. After all, not all east oakers were doomed to be assholes, right?
"We will both be there," she told Marissa, sending a grin in Reese 's direction. She hadn't said anything yet, although rylee knee that her friend had to be thinking about it and would most likely curse at her for volunteering up her talent, but she saw Reese in action and knew that it would be stupid for her to not take this opportunity. Rylee wouldn't let her pass it up.
"Nice to meet you, Marissa" Rylee managed, surprised at her politeness as she slung an arm over Reese 's shoulder. "We have a song to prepare."

Once Marissa mentioned the cash, she knew that the Reese girl would pay more attention and be more willing to go. It might have been a low card to play, but Marissa was desperate to see Rylee again. Plus, the East Side wasn't all that dangerous. When her fingers brushed against Rylee's as she handed over the scrap piece of paper, they felt alive. It felt like.... something different that Marissa just couldn't explain.
She smiled widely at both girls. "Great! I'll see you at the competition then. I'll be in the crowd, cheering you on." Marissa waved, heading towards the counter. Placing the records down, she reached for her wallet and nodded towards Rylee. "Also, I'd like to pay for her large slurpee." Anxiously, she looked back at Rylee and Reese and hoped they wouldn't be offended or anything. A nice gesture. That's what friends do. "Again, just call me if the plan changes."

"Did you hit your head on something?" Resse asked Rylee quiet enough that the Marissa girl wouldn't be able to hear as the turned to leave the store. "You really expect me to go with you all the way over that park just so you can make a new friend and I can embarrass myself in front of god knows how many guys in tight designer jeans and girls in mini skirts and 7 inch heels?" Rylee continued, actually picturing what she may have to face if she actually agreed to the crazy idea. "Not to mention the fact that Gabe would literally kill me if he found out I went over there!" Reese's voice picked up a little as she made it outside, not quite caring if the girl heard, figuring they may never see her again anyway. Even with Rylee's efforts and the temptation of the cash prize, a huge part of Reese was telling her this was a bad idea.
Reese drooped her skateboard down in front of her, and placed one foot in the middle of it, looking over at Rylee before they skated back toward their homes. "I swear you've gone clinically insane," Reese added, snatching Rylee's Slurpee from her hand again, and taking a sip, thrusting the cup back to her friend. She had even less of an issue taking some of her friend's frozen treat now that she wasn't even the one paying for it. "Like since when do you accept handouts," she pointed out, taking in the fact that Rylee let the girl pay for the Slurpee without a fight.

For a moment, Rylee stared giddily down at the scrap of paper in her hands with Marissa's phone number on it. Her handwriting was swirly and beautiful, nothing like Rylee's that barely qualified as chicken scratch equivalent to a fourth grade boy.
"Yeah, see you there," she told her as she turned away with a swish of her hair, heading towards the counter where Lee was. She heard her say that she wanted to pay for her slurpee and at first, Rylee felt annoyed. She could pay for it. Just because she lived on the west side didn't mean she was incapable, but that was her typical reaction to people doing like that, assuming that they meant to be snide about it, only she got a vibe that Marissa wasn't, especially with the glance she sent back at her and Reese. She tried to feel appreciative of it instead, but it felt odd.
"Come on, Reese," Rylee said with a roll of her eyes. "I get it. East Oakers are intimidating and dress freakishly well, but this contest is about talent, raw talent, which you happen to have and you just let it go unnoticed everyday because your brother won't let you anywhere near the place that could make it happen." Rylee understood why Gabe was so wary of the East, but it wasn't his decision to make. Besides, you couldn't sit around in their dump of a town waiting for things to happen. Reese needed a push. "He doesn't have to know, alright? It'll be between you and me. And it's not just so I can make a new friend, it's so that you get the shot you deserve." Well...and so she could see Marissa again.
She followed Reese's lead, dropping her skateboard to the ground and jumping on, following her down the street. "It wasn't a hand out," she corrected Reese. "She was obviously flirting with me." At least Rylee hoped so. She was fairly good at identifying the behavior. "Part of me wanted to tell her I'd pay for it myself, but I didn't because I'm pretty sure she was just trying to be nice."
"And I'm not clinically insane," she countered as they skated home, passing the slurpee back and forth between them. "We need to live a little and the east side...haven't you ever wondered what it's like? They have actual hockey leagues over there too, Reese. I'd kill to be on one of them." She'd show anybody who doubted her what she was made of.

"I'm pretty sure that if they wanted West Oakers at this competition we would have hear about it by now," Reese pointed out to her friend as they skated down the street. In fact, usually any huge event taking place in East Oak only becomes known to West Oak citizens after the event takes place and its put in the newspaper. It was pretty annoying, really, how all the students at East Oak high got the opportunity to participate in events and contests which only give them more money they don't need (at least in comparison to the need of the students of West Oak).
"And if we're just there for the opportunity than why are you so insistent that this girl was obviously flirting with you and just trying to be nice?" Reese added, building her argument against what she was fairly sure was a bad idea. Sneaking around wasn't something Reese liked to do. She didn't like breaking rules - especially those her family set for her. And while her mother never explicitly said she couldn't go to the east side, she was pretty sure that her mom wouldn't appreciate it. "I don't care who or what was flirting with you I still think its a bad idea. And I mean sure... it would be kind of funny so see how they live over there. I mean I've seen enough of their ridiculous prom dresses in my mom's shop to know they all dress like prostitutes and wear 6 inch heels that Beyonce couldn't walk in.... but I still don't think we should."

Rylee sighed. "Reese, you're seriously just coming up with every reason not to go," she told her when she'd finished speaking as they skated towards home, the run down buildings of west oak coming into view. Her mind briefly wandered to Marissa and how she was walking into streets with no pot holes and huge mansions with swimming pools. "I want to go because I want to be out in the crowd with Marissa, but it'll be you that I'm watching up on stage. You can't pass up this opportunity! You deserve it. And it's a chance to experience something else!" Rylee had an insatiable curiosity about the east side and that's where all of the chances were to become somebody and be known. "The prize is a good amount of cash and you love to sing, what other convincing do you need?"
She finished off her slushie, slurping up the last few sips before they reached their neighborhood.

Reese sighed, "You're ridiculous you know that?" She realized her friend wasn't going to stop bugging her about this. Rylee was completely set on Reese preforming, and even though Reese wasn't completely sold she knew her friend would drag her there at this point. Otherwise, the subject would have been dropped already. "I'll think about it," Reese promised, even though she wished they could both just forget about it. The notion of a cash prize was gnawing at Reese's mind and reminding her that a few thousand dollars would be enough to pay the bills for quite some time. Her mother wouldn't have to hem so many cocktail dresses. And they could probably have Jimmy's more than once a month. That being said, Reese still wasn't completely comfortable. Gabe scared her away from the East side since she was little, and she couldn't help but believe the stories he told, even now as a teen. It was one of the few things Gabe showed emotion about, and when Gabe got emotional it was hard to convince yourself he was wrong or kidding.
