Things had become unbearable. Leighton felt all sorts of alone in everything, not to mention that the pressure from her father about entering a summer tennis tournament was really starting to get to her. She made a big show of going out to her light blue convertible and driving off after Paxton and her got into a heated argument that ended with their father stepping in and telling her to practice her tennis. She was angry for how he treated her and how he let Alayna treat her. That night at the club had gotten to her, even if she wouldn't show it around Alayna. She'd yelled at him when he'd gotten on her nerves at home and things had only gone from there.
Needing to let off steam, she'd taken off, her red hair flowing behind her as she drove around East Oak, in search of anywhere to go. She'd finally pulled into the park and grabbed her purse from the passenger seat to go find a bench to sit and read at. Reading always managed to calm her down. She just needed to lose herself in the story...that was all.
She sat down, smoothing out her ruffled skirt and crossing her legs, enjoying the sun beating down on her, but no amount of vitamin D could take away this annoyance.

Gavin was very shocked to find his mother at home today, and then her taking care of his sister even though she should be in bed sleeping. As a neurosurgeon his mother found herself barely sleeping anymore than a few hours a night, and then keeping herself awake on coffee and those 5-hour energy shots that supposedly work so well. But every once and a while they would allow her to take one week's vacation just to rest, and well, that was what she wasn't doing now. Resting.
But even despite his protest, Gavin's mother refused to let him take care of his little sister, and actually told him to go out and have fun. Have fun doing what, exactly? But nonetheless, he left, with his German Shepherd on the leash, heading to the park. The park was maybe a few blocks away from the house, so it didn't take long. But when he got there, Axle found himself leading the way to where he wanted to go. It didn't take long for him to find a 'target' to investigate. Axle loved being around people and general, and he usually had a good sense on which person would pet him nicely and just coo over him. "Dammit Axle!" He cried as the dog practically dragged him, and eventually he was forced to let go of the leash that was digging into his hand. Axle ran to a red-headed girl sitting in the grass reading peacefully.
"Oh, I'm so sorry." Gavin said quickly and he sprinted up to the spot where the dog stood. Axle barked once at the girl, and Gavin quickly hushed him with a flick of the wrist. "My dog can be a bit... curious."

Leighton tried to lose herself in her novel, but it wasn't long before she heard a guy yelling and looked up to see a german shepard bounding towards her. The dog put a paw up on her skirt and she reached down to touch his head, rubbing it. She'd always wanted a pet, but her parents weren't too keen on them. That and she didn't trust Paxton around a dog. A golden retriever was always what she'd wanted because they seemed loyal and god knows that loyalty was needed in East Oak because it was scarce. It was sad that she hoped to find that in a dog rather than a person. "Axle, huh?" she said to the cute dog, tilting her head and smiling. "You're quite the adventurous dog."
Seconds later, a tall male had caught up to his dog, holding a leash in his hand. The dog barked, but it didn't bother Leighton. "It's fine," she assured the guy. "I like dogs." He seemed to be from around here. She'd sworn she'd seen him around school. She only said the minimum though, because she'd become way too wary of people around here.

Gavin was expecting the girl to jump and scream, or whack Axle, in all honesty. An 80 pound dog like Axle didn't always come across as cute as he came barreling towards you. He wasn't the friendliest looking dog either, with a scar coming across his face from a Boxer play date gone wrong. To Gavin, it gave him character. But Gavin also knew what a kind and loving dog Axle was, so he never was truly frightened by him.
Instead, he found himself looking down at the redheaded girl smiling at Axle and giving him a quick pat on the head. "Definitely good to know. Axle has a bit of a habit of running into trouble unintentionally." Gavin rubbed the back of his neck and gave her an embarrassed smile. "But he sure as hell makes a good investigative companion, that's for sure." Gavin and Axle's personality went hand in hand, and that is why Gavin never questioned his choice of dog. Ever. Watching the red-headed girl petting Axle made him a bit curious though. Who was she? Sure, he'd probably have seen her around school, but he really didn't pay much attention to the strangers around him unless given good reason to.
"Hey, I haven't got your name yet. I'm Gavin," He said.

Leighton continued to pet the dog's head, nodding up at the guy. Dogs always got themselves into mischief, but somehow Leighton that thought would be fun. "Investigative companion?" She raised an eyebrow at him. Was that a joke or was he serious? Either way, it peaked her interest right away. Leighton had always been into investigative kind of things. She wanted to be a reporter since she was young and read Nancy Drew for hours on end. Not to mention, she was always questioning everything, something most found annoying. At least in that field it would be accepted as the norm. "What do you mean?" she asked curiously.
"And I'm Leighton." Gavin, huh? He looked to be familiar and she'd probably seen him around school. He was most likely in Paxton's grade.

Gavin nodded, looking down at the German shepherd to determine whether or not he should pull Axle back. But seeing the cool and collected expression the girl wore, he figured it would be no harm to just leave him there. Axle seemed happy to be doted over, so Gavin let his hand go slack.
"Yeah, I have a thing for criminal investigations and things like that. I want to be a cop when I turn nineteen since they don't let us join until then." It was true. Gavin wanted to be a homicide detective, and he had a strong sense of justice that presented itself in him. He grinned. "You're eyes sort of widened when I said 'investigating', you have a thing for it too?" Gavin asked with a small chuckle.
"Leighton? The name sounds slightly familiar," He looked Leighton for a moment before he realized they were in the same school. "Ahh, I think I've seen you around the school campus. Crazy how we've never talked, eh?"

Leighton began rubbing behind the dog's ears. She didn't mind petting him since she didn't have a pet of her own. She listened intently to Gavin at the same time, incredibly interested in what he was saying, which wasn't often when she was around others from East Oak. He wanted to be a cop? Leighton wasn't usually all over anybody, but she couldn't help but think of how good this guy would look in uniform. She laughed slightly at his observation, appreciating how he had his eyes peeled to take in everything around him just as she did. "You noticed that?" She couldn't help but grin. "Yeah, I want to be a reporter. It's a bit different." But not entirely. Both wanted the truth, just not necessarily justice. Although Leighton planned on being a true reporter, not one of the biased ones from the East.
"Yeah, well...let's just say that I don't usually go out of my way to talk to people in that school." It was East Oak Prep after all. Shit, that sounded incredibly bitchy. She bit her lip. Her name probably sounded familiar because of who her brother was. Gavin and him were in the same grade, right? "I'm just...wary of people around here." She was kind of testing him in a way. She'd like to think that a guy like him who wanted to go into the police force had his priorities straight, but she didn't know when so many people put up a front in the East.
